As well as physical protection, Aikido skills offer effective means to convert adversity into advantage, conflict into creativity and has day to day application in dealing with mental, emotional and social conflict, as well as well as neutralising the stresses of modern life. This unique outlook enables you to find the advantage hidden in a disadvantage and using it constructively whilst retaining your own integrity to successfully assert yourself without aggression. Some have called Aikido “moving Zen” or “dynamic meditation”, yet its principles have very practical application.

Although Aikido practice is enjoyable and visually attractive, its practical application in a real situation is that it is designed to finish and de-escalate a fight fast and safely, with the defender in charge instead of drawn out, point scoring, glitz or dangerous escalation. The aggression is over before it starts. Beginners learn strong basics including balance, the physics and dynamics of movement and the mind/ body link until they learn to move naturally and progress to advanced techniques. Consideration is given to your physical attributes, size, strength and level of fitness of each individual who starts up and each class is adapted to you. Your transformation is monitored and graded.

Together with bio-mechanics, the mind/body link is currently being studied and tested by elite athletes and coaches in conjunction with modern sports coaching principles.

The principles of AI-KI are simple, natural and effective and can be mastered by anyone of any age and may be applied to better all aspects of life.

Aikido differs from standard fighting arts in that it employs the principles of harmony in preference to brutal clashing, bashing or struggle.

This gives you a remarkable advantage because harmony relies on the pre-existing principles of natural physics and dynamics of movement in action and also KI, known as the mind-body connection.

Through regular practice you unlock a natural process that empowers you to become progressively able to reconcile conflict before it turns into aggression; and if necessary, redirect the energy of any attack to win. In daily life, once activated, this principle enables you to calmly retain your integrity and convert any difficulty or challenge to your advantage.

The masters who survived, discovered long ago that real violence is never ‘fair’ and does not observe ‘rules’. Rather, survival strategy is paramount. So they evolved a realistic art that takes these factors into account. In a self defence situation it becomes possible for lighter and smaller persons to successfully protect themselves.

Aikido training incorporates a broad spectrum of techniques based on the simple dynamics of natural movement and includes arrest, restraint, striking, pressure points, grappling and various protection skills teaching you to stay in charge and retain your personal power and integrity in a unique way of dancing with conflict to win, instead of struggling or giving up.

Regular training improves vitality, stimulates life force and general health and fitness, is good for normalising bodyweight, aerobic fitness, mental clarity, peace of mind especially in stressful situations and enables you to develop a strong mindfocus and awareness with powerful self defence capabilities.

Aikido is adaptable to people of any gender, all ages, sizes, shapes and temperaments and is also fun training where you can progress at your own level of fitness, which of course will get increasingly better over time

It is a tradition in Aikido that senior students help the juniors in their development and progress and you are surrounded by an experienced support team at all times during training.
